Ever been frustrated that there are no options for composting if you live in an apartment building? I was too. So I decided to approach the City of Vancouver about this and they have now agreed to launch a pilot multi-fmaily composting program! Read on to find out how your building can get involved!
Since 1990, the City of Vancouver has provided subsidized backyard composters to residents. Currently, over 46,000 houses in Vancouver compost in their very own backyards. Backyard composting is a simple garden activity that anyone can do with the right tools and instructions – even people living in multi-family dwellings!
Backyard composting is the perfect way for your complex to save money and help the environment, because it:
q “closes the loop” directly back to the earth
q requires no fuel burning collection trucks (lowers GHG emissions)
q provides a supply of compost for residents to use
q enhances the sense of community within the complex
q allows residents to “do their part” too!
q reduces garbage and saves money on garbage collection
COME TO AN INFORMATION SESSION AT CITY HALL ON MAY 21ST AT 7:00 PM TO FIND OUT MORE AND SEE HOW COMPOSTING CAN WORK IN YOUR BUILDING.
ATTENDEES WILL RECEIVE A FREE COMPOST BIN AND AERATOR FOR YOUR COMPLEX FROM THE CITY!
Subsequent bins will be available at a subsidized cost of $25 each. It is recommended that multi-family buildings start with two bins.
