Celebrate Pi Day with Vancouver’s Best Pie

  • March 14th is international Pi Day: the 14th day of the 3rd month, or 3.14, marks the perfect day to celebrate this special, infinite number with pie! And because we’re geeky like that, we’ve rounded up the city’s best pie places so you can indulge in baked goodness while reciting the one trillion digits that have been calculated past Pi’s decimal point –so far!

    1. Pi is represented by the Greek letter “π”, a mathematical symbol that represents a constant. Our first stop, naturally, is Aphrodite’s Cafe and Pie Shop on Fourth Ave. Appropriate for its Greek goddess of love namesake, and a Kitsilano institution, Aphrodite’s offers up organic pies made on site, along with vegan and gluten-free options.
    2. Worth the visit to West Van, the Savary Island Pie Company serves up slices of homemade pies along with breakfast, lunch and dinner at their Marine Drive location. Choose from Savary Island’s extensive menu featuring savory chicken pot pies to traditional sweet berry pies, or go off-book and place a custom order.
    3. Stuffing your pie hole since 2011 boasts The Pie Hole’s slogan. Sisters Jenell and Carla Parsons are making good on their promise with scrumptious, seasonally-inspired pies found at various retail locations around the lower mainland. Check their Fresh Sheet for what’s hot out of the oven; you can even order direct from the website.
    4. Look out for the Aussie Pie Guy’s Food Truck around Vancouver, their take on the traditional Aussie pie is made from free range BC beef smothered in gravy infused with Howe Sound Rail Ale. Finish off with a Sweetie Pie: an “apple pie the aussie way”. Delivery and pre-ordered frozen takeaway options available as well!
    5. The Pie Shoppe offers up mouth-watering confections such as the Walnut + Bourbon, Salted Honey, and Citrus Lime Custard on seasonal rotation. Made in-house from scratch, their pies are made from whatever’s in season and locally sourced. Pair your slice with a cup of organic, small-batch roasted coffee from Panoramic Coffee Roasters.
