Your Guide to the Perfect Canada Day Picnic

  • This year we wish the true North strong and free a very happy 150th birthday. In celebration of our country, community, and beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia that we call home, we’ve put together your recipe for the perfect picnic. Because when you buy a home in one of the most beautiful places on earth, you celebrate in style!

    Choose the Perfect Venue

Located along the shores of English Bay in the West Point Grey neighbourhood of stately homes, the Spanish Banks are the ultimate venue for a Canada Day picnic. From plenty of shoreline for swimming, sunbathing, beach volleyball and playing with your pup, to the adjacent sprawling green lawns perfect for bocce and barbeques — not to mention unbeatable views of the Vancouver city skyline and North Shore mountains.

If it’s East Vancouver you call home, Trout Lake is your best bet for a full day’s worth of activities in one place. The man-made beach is complimented by walking trails, water activities and plenty of picnic space. There are barbeque pits, and reservation possibilities as well.

    Pack a Family-Friendly Meal

For an unbeatable menu, there are sixty tried and true recipes from Food Network Canada to keep the whole family happy. These easy make-ahead meals feature fresh food, small portions, and plenty of taste.

Visit the Okanagan Estate Wine Shop at 4th and Alma for the best selection of vino our province has to offer to compliment your picnic eats. Because celebrating our country’s 150th by cheersing with out-of-state wine would be blasphemous.

Picnic Accessories for the Perfect Afternoon

We love the classic Canadian Throw from our country’s iconic department store, Hudson’s Bay. Perfect for lounging on in patriotic style. Keep it red and white for the rest of your accessories, such as these cute and reusable hamburger baskets from the Real Canadian Superstore.

    Fun and Simple Picnic Tips

Stay hydrated! If you’re in for the long-haul, pack your H20 in collapsible water bottles for easy storage after the fact. Got crushable snacks? Put them in a ziplock bag anyway and seal leaving space enough for a straw. Blow to inflate, then extract the straw and seal it up. Don’t forget a trash bag! Double duty: use your doggy’s bag holder to keep extra trash bags at your fingertips for easy disposal. And to tote all of your goodies, the accordion-folding Coleman Outdoor Picnic Wagon is your best friend.

    Post-Picnic Activities

While your Canada Day picnic day might be the highlight of your weekend, there’s plenty of more time over the weekend to celebrate Canada 150! From ceremonies to concerts, food to fireworks, celebrate Canada Day at Canada Place downtown Vancouver. The two-day event spanning the weekend of July 1st, will be fun for the whole family!
