How to Make the Most of Family Day

  • Monday, February 8th marks Family Day in BC. The relatively new holiday that nicely breaks up the long winter stretch between New Year’s and Easter is meant to give everyone a much-needed break with the underlying intention of bringing families together. Why not take a break from housework, homework, and work in general? In the spirit of Family Day, here are our top picks for how to spend your long weekend.

    1. Go device-free. You may be met with serious protest from the rest of the family, but putting your smartphones, tablets, and computers on sleep mode for at least one of the three-day weekend will go a long way to recharging–and ensuring you’re spending time with each other, and not sneaking peeks at a screen.
    2. While you’re enjoying a power-free day, why not break out the old-school way to play and round up the gang for a Game Night? From favourites like Monopoly to the astonishing variety of pop-culture board games available, there’s something for everybody. Check out our favourites here.
    3. Road-trip and activity in one: trek out to the historic Gulf of Georgia Cannery in quaint Steveston, BC. On the edge of Richmond, this quaint fishing village boasts numerous restaurants and shops, not to mention hosting ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time as the fictional town Storybrooke. The Cannery is offering free admission on the 8th for kids 16 years and under, where they can explore local history and see the machines in action!
    4. Most community centers in the lower mainland are hosting family friendly all-ages fun in association with the Vancouver Park Board. Check your local center’s calendar for a detailed listing of events in your neighbourhood, such as the Family Day event at Kitsilano Community Center from 10:30 – 1:30, Monday, February 8th.
    5. Attend a special one-day presentation of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. Arrive early for a lantern-making workshop. Got sports fans on your hands? Vancouver’s Western Hockey League team, the Giants are playing the Edmonton Oil Kings at 2:00pm, then join the team for a post-game skate!

Wishing you and yours a very happy Family Day!
